With the quickly improving build quality, speed, and more oil-tight engines, motorcycle racing was able to move from dirt tracks onto the motordromes of the 1910s– large wooden board tracks used for streamlined competition with banked turns of 70-80 degrees. Riders soon learned a neat trick– that with a little speed, centripetal force made it possible for them to stick their bike sideways in turns on a completely vertical wall.

Motorcycle companies here and abroad (Indian and BSA, to name a couple) found that the public loved the thrill of peering down just a few feet away from the gunning biker beneath them, and thus it quickly became a highly promoted spectacle as manufacturers used it as a vehicle to advertise their brands, and daredevil riders upped the ante at breakneck speed to make a name for themselves and solidify their reputations on the infamous Wall of Death.

With roots that can be traced back to New York’s own Coney Island, the Wall of Deathattraction morphed into a motordrome on crack. Motorcycles, carts and yep, even lions– simultaneously racing and criss-crossing in a raucous blur of fumes, fury, and fur inside the equivalent of an over-sized wooden barrel. The sport had a strong run from the 1930s- 1960s (with Indian Scouts being the over-riding bike of choice), but there are still hardcore enthusiasts to be found all over keeping it alive today.

The History of the Wheel

The wheel is probably the most important mechanical invention of all time. Nearly every machine built since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution involves a single, basic principle embodied in one of mankind’s truly significant inventions. It’s hard to imagine any mechanized system that would be possible without the wheel or the idea of a symmetrical component moving in a circular motion on an axis. From tiny watch gears to automobiles, jet engines skateboards and bicycles, the principle is the same.

Based on diagrams on ancient clay tablets, the earliest known use of this essential invention was a potter’s wheel that was used at Ur in Mesopotamia (part of modern day Iraq} as early as 3500 BC. The first use of the wheel for transportation was probably on Mesopotamian chariots in 3200 BC. It is interesting to note that wheels may have had industrial or manufacturing applications before they were used on vehicles.

A wheel with spokes first appeared on Egyptian chariots around 2000 BC, and wheels seem to have developed in Europe by 1400 BC without any influence from the Middle East. Because the idea of the wheel appears so simple, it’s easy to assume that the wheel would have simply "happened" in every culture when it reached a particular level of sophistication. However, this is not the case. The great Inca, Aztec and Maya civilizations reached an extremely high level of development, yet they never used the wheel. In fact, there is no evidence that the use of the wheel existed among native people anywhere in the Western Hemisphere until well after contact with Europeans.

Even in Europe, the wheel evolved little until the beginning of the nineteenth century. However, with the coming of the Industrial Revolution the wheel became the central component of technology, and came to be used in thousands of ways in countless different mechanisms.

Bicycles have been such a integral part of international culture... we have so many different uses, styles and benefits.... Keep the bicycle culture growing! I have read post that mock the recent fixed gear movement.. Why??? it's a good thing, it gets people out of the house from in front of the TV. Some people may be doing it because it's cool now and trending but it's one of the more positive and beneficial trends out there in "hip culture" internationally. Check the pics and the rockin' styles all of these guys have.

Adam 'MCA' Yauch of Beastie Boys diagnosed with cancer; album, tour postponed

One of the year’s most anticipated album/tour campaigns has been pushed back indefinitely due to the shocking announcement from the Beastie Boys camp this morning that the one of their members has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor.

“Adam 'MCA' Yauch of Beastie Boys was diagnosed last week as having a cancerous tumor in his left parotid [salivary] gland,” reads the official press release from EMI Music. “Luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable. It will however require surgery and several weeks of additional treatment. Fortunately the cancer is not in a location that will affect Yauch's vocal chords. Beastie Boys have canceled all upcoming concert appearances to allow time for Yauch's surgery and recovery. The release of the band's forthcoming album 'Hot Sauce Committee Part 1' will also be pushed back.”

This scraps dates slated for summer festivals such as Chicago’s Lollapalooza and San Francisco’s Outside Lands. Locally, this means that the band’s debut at the Hollywood Bowl scheduled for Sept. 24 will have to wait for another summer.

Yauch originally made the announcement via YouTube, where he did his best to maintain a sense of humor about the diagnosis: “It's a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because I was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later."

Evan Roth's Graffiti Taxonomy: Paris, 2009

Evan Roth's latest graffiti taxonomy project is now on display at Fondation Cartier’s Born In The Streets - Graffiti exhibition in Paris. It's a study of the stylistic diversity found in Parisian graffiti tags. Evan photographed over 2,400 graffiti tags from April 24 to April 28, 2009 found in each of Paris’s 20 districts. Photographs were then archived, tagged and sorted by letter. The ten most commonly used letters by Paris graffiti writers were identified for further study (A,E,I,K,N,O,R,S,T and U). From each letter grouping, eighteen tags were isolated to represent the diversity and range of that specific character. Evan explains that the sets are not intended to display the “best” graffiti tags in Paris, but rather aim to highlight the diversity of forms ranging from upper case to lowercase, simple to complex and legible to cryptic.

The Twitterati are only too happy to take their private moments public. But Silicon Valley's technical wizards are whispering to one another over lunch that the the federal intelligence apparatus wants more, and is taking it.

Whoever is seeding the restaurant gossip is being fairly specific. A source tells us that a loose-lipped Twitter engineer recently dished that the company has allowed a federal agency to set up a tap to monitor a "firehose" of its data, including private details on users presumably including private "direct messages" IP addresses and account information. The Feds — the NSA would seem the most logical agency —then analyze the data to mine for information they deem of interest.

By now, most of you have seen the line-up of sneakers created by Kanye West for Louis Vuitton. Opinions vary on the outcome of the collection. The line has been compared to what Louis Vuitton has done in the past with sneakers, and the Kanye West collection beats those efforts by leaps and bounds. Just like in the regular sneaker game, some people like it more colorful, others like it more subtle, and this line-up offers something for both tastes. The HIGHSNOBIETY guys prefer the tonal high tops. They also had the chance to field test them and say that quality and fabrication are very much on point, as to be expected from Louis Vuitton.

Having worked recently with Nike on the Air Yeezy, the LV collection is the second major sneaker project by Kanye West. Take a step back and think about what is happening here - you see collaborations all the time with boutiques, brands, artists and other creative fields. How many times can the colors and the materials on the same shoe silhouette be changed and still look new and different from the hundreds of releases we see every year? Kanye West got to design his very own silhouettes in both cases, probably the most impressive part about these projects.

With the Kanye West x Louis Vuitton sneakers releasing worldwide in the coming weeks, HIGHSNOBIETY wanted to do something out of the ordinary with the footwear Louis Vuitton gladly lent them for this special shoot. They teamed up with German photographer Daniela Muller-Brunke to shine some new light onto the Kanye West x Louis Vuitton collection. If you were lucky enough to grow up without all the crap of today that sucks our kid’s time and energy– video games, the internet, satellite t.v., then you might remember what it was like to ride your bike all day long with your buddies– crafting makeshift ramps, making up crazy stunts and tricks, and just having a honest-to-goodness blast cruising the streets until Mom called you in. For a lot of us, it was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with wheels. The Schwinn Sting-Ray was a two-wheeled blacktop beast back then– especially with the on-the-frame gear shift and a fat rear slick. It was the only bike that mattered– before the BMX madness struck, that is.

I feel sorry for these fat, lazy, spoiled kids of today– wasting away in front of their t.v. screens and computer monitors. Man– get outside you chubby little brats! Seriously– do you think kids are better off today? No friggin’ way. They wouldn’t last two seconds back in the day. It’s time to throw all that crap out and lock ‘em outside. A little road rash would definitely do the buggers good.

If you don't know.... then you are merely a consumer of what they do and what they have been an instrumental part of creating. These guys are the street fashion Vets. Shawn Stussy has been at it for over 25 years, James Jebbia and Eddie Cruz started the retail end of things for Stussy , Union and most recently Supreme ( Recent like 13 years ago). Imani Lanier designed and produced the first Supreme collection for James Jebbia and Launched a men's collection called Biast about the same time Rick Klotz formed Jive. Jive and XLarge had to be the two LA city big boys which is where Eli Bonerz comes in to play( Mike D of the Beastie Boys was a share holder ). Grant Lau started a line in SD with the Behind The post office guys called Greed..... David No worked with Eddie Cruz and developed his own collection called Deep Note.... On the east Coast Russ with support of James Jebbia started SSUR... Stash got Recon going and Futura was working with Agnes B on the first of the ever so popular collabs. Fraser Cook was distributing street Wear into the UK with Michael Koppleman and is now with Nike. Alfred Hawkins has been holding it down for the SO cal skate apparel game from the get, but started it back in the day with Subliminal and Andre the Giant in South Carolina... He was actually business partners with Sheppard Fairey. Alyasha Moore has been responsible for brands such as Alpha Numeric and Fiber Ops...... These are the guys who attended ASR and 432F when there was no Streetwear section and 432F was held in a old victorian hotel in downtown SD. Japan was hungry for fashion and we gave them what they wanted. It was a great partnership.... We all had a lot of fun back in those days. It would be great to catch up with all of these guys and trade stories of the beginnings of what is now so mainstream and commercial. These are the guys who took the risk for all the LRG's, RVCA, Obey, Volcom, 10 Deep, Upper PlayGround, The Hundreds and many ....many more...... Thanks goes out to these guys for having a real and independent vision that paved the way for fashion as we no it today.

I fell out of love with Magazines many years ago as I noticed the increase in the amount of ADs being run in my favorite monthly publications... I was a big fan of The Face, I-D, Interview, Tank, Surface, and many others that don't come to mind at the moment. I m still a fan of National Geo, Thrasher, Juxtapose, And many Japanese Fashion Publications that speak to our good ol' American way of being...uuumm, American.. Huge is one of my favs as well as Free&Easy. But! And I repeat..But! The only Magazine that I get absolutely bummed out when it's not on the stand is MONOCLE! This Magazine is a complete balance of style, culture, politics, travel and the arts. It's a cover to cover read for sure.... If you don't have friends that have already turned you on to it. It's been in circulation for about 2 years now and is the project of Tyler Brule, (Wallpaper Founder). This is a highly suggested monthly purchase if you are at all interested with things that are happening now outside your hood. For you LA people they opened a retail store in Brentwood where you can purchase collab products as well as back issues of the zine. Check It!

The point of this Blog is to touch on the commonality of fashion and design in general with the lifestyle that is skateboarding, surfing and the recent boom of fixed gear bicycling. There is a certain independence and freedom that these activities and lifestyles tend to generate inside of a person when they are a participant in these lifestyle activities. Part of being associated with a subculture or indy movement is the individualism for each person that takes part in it. For years skaters have just done their own thing from a style point of view, balancing the need for mobility and the expression of going against the grain.... having their own ideas of wrong and right. Music has always had a big influence on the Skate and surf culture as it does with fixed gear riding. But as the world has become smaller largely in part to do with "WWW." Just like music there has emerged a mash up generation.... of "hipsters" . Some people see fixed gear riders at a bunch of hipsters and do not respect it because they believe it is a trend. Also their are the "O.G." messengers who like skateboarders feel the culture has been bastardized and brought to the masses.... Just like fashion designers who are passionate about their trade and are crushed by brands like Ed Hardy or Retailers who can not compete with Walmart. Well to cut it short life is a balance and at the end of the day and it is nature that rules all.... it is human nature to want to have something to hold close and know it is ours, it is human nature to want to belong and be a part of something bigger than us, it is human nature to be envious of what others have instead of being grateful for all that we have already in hand. But one day I hope most of us will come to appreciate the individuality that anyone reading this is a part of... we are the ones who dictate the future of fashion and art ... Skateboarders have been 2 to 3 years ahead of the curve from the day that kid screwed roller skate wheels to a plank! And know just like my skate and surf brothers and sisters around the world individualism has found more fans with the fixed generation... fashion, lifestyle, active life, individualism, mash up culture, hard core, bboy, punk rock, Thrashers!!!!!!!!!
